Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil Review: The BHA-Infused Korean Cleansing Oil

Hanskin is a Korean skincare brand with a particular focus on pore management. Their Pore Cleansing Oil is distinctive in the cleansing oil category for one reason: it contains BHA (beta-hydroxy acid), specifically salicylic acid, in the formula.

Most cleansing oils are purely physical cleansers — they use oil-on-oil dissolution to break down sebum, makeup, and sunscreen. The Hanskin formula adds a chemical cleansing dimension through BHA, which is oil-soluble and can penetrate into pores to dissolve sebum deposits.

What Makes This Cleansing Oil Different

Standard cleansing oils dissolve makeup and surface-level oil effectively but do not address what's inside pores. Blackheads — oxidized sebum plugs at the pore opening — require chemical action to fully address, not just physical cleansing.

By incorporating BHA, Hanskin's Pore Cleansing Oil attempts to provide two functions simultaneously: effective makeup removal and mild pore-clearing action.

Key Ingredients

Salicylic Acid (BHA) Oil-soluble exfoliating acid that dissolves the oil and cellular debris that clogs pores. In a rinse-off formula, contact time is short, limiting its exfoliating efficacy compared to leave-on BHA treatments. However, consistent use over time does contribute to reduced blackhead visibility and cleaner-appearing pores.

Green Tea Extract Antioxidant-rich ingredient that neutralizes oxidative damage from environmental pollutants. Contributes to the formula's mild soothing and protective effect.

Allantoin Soothing agent that counterbalances potential irritation from BHA. Particularly relevant for skin using the formula during morning routines.

Lightweight Plant Oils The oil base is a blend of lighter plant-derived oils (jojoba, caprylic/capric triglycerides) rather than heavy mineral oil or silicones, making it less likely to leave residue.

Performance

Makeup Removal The Hanskin oil removes standard foundation, blush, and light-to-moderate mascara effectively. For waterproof mascara or heavy eye makeup, additional product or a dedicated eye makeup remover is recommended. Emulsification with water is clean — minimal residue after rinsing.

Pore-Clearing Effect Over 4-6 weeks of consistent use, many users report visibly cleaner pores and a reduction in blackhead count. Single-use results are not dramatic — this is a cumulative benefit.

Skin Feel Post-Use Clean and slightly hydrated. The oil base and allantoin leave skin comfortable without greasiness, provided you rinse thoroughly.

How to Use

  1. Apply to dry hands and a dry face
  2. Massage gently for 60-90 seconds, focusing on nose, chin, and forehead
  3. Add water to emulsify — the oil turns milky
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
  5. Follow with a water-based second cleanser

Use as the first step in a double cleanse. Morning or evening use is appropriate.

Who Is This For?

Best for:

  • Oily skin with enlarged pores or blackhead concerns
  • Those who want a multifunctional first cleanse
  • Skincare routines that don't include a separate BHA treatment

Consider alternatives if:

  • You have dry or sensitive skin (consider a non-BHA cleansing oil)
  • You already use a leave-on BHA (adding BHA in cleansing may be redundant)
  • You prefer a gel or foam as your first cleanse

Comparison

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil — Popular Japanese option, effective makeup removal, no BHA differentiation. Better for dry skin types.

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil — Premium option, nourishing botanical oils, no BHA content.

Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA Cleansing Foam — Chemical-cleansing focus but foam format, less effective for makeup removal.

Hanskin is a strong choice for oily skin types who want the efficacy of both oil cleansing and BHA action without adding a separate step.

Retail Notes

Hanskin has gained recognition globally through the K-Beauty community's recommendation ecosystem. The pore-cleansing differentiation gives the product a clear narrative for retail marketing.
